Abstract
This is a ethnography of a fairly remote Rungus Dusun village in the Kudat Penninsula of northern Sabah state, Malaysia. The Rungus live in villages of one to three longhouses. Although villages and longhouses are social and political units, Appell argues that the domestic family is the main ritual, jural, and corporate unit in Rungus society. He demonstrates this claim by examining the Rungus marriage and residence patterns, and property system. A detailed analysis of Dusun spirits, taboos, delicts, and suits also demarcate households as distinct units. He discusses the impact the change to individual ownership of land will have on Dusun society. The appendix includes a four-page glossary.
