Abstract
This is a general ethnography and culture history of the Nayar caste of central Kerala (Cochin). It covers historical information on military organization and warfare, house type and construction, caste subdivisions, personal names and titles, marriage customs, puberty customs (for the girl), polygamy, childbirth, naming ceremonies, the tarawád (matrilocal joint family), administration of justice, feudalism, village organization, districts, games, dramatic performances, religious and agricultural festivals, religion, funeral customs, caste occupations, food, clothing, and personal ornamentation. Of particular interest is the information on Nayar serpent cults and demon worship.
