Abstract
This monograph resulted from Goodenough's field work on Chuuk as a part of Yale University's participation in the Coordinated Investigation of Micronesian Anthropology (CIMA), sponsored by the Pacific Science Board of the National Research Council, during 1947-1948. The author, a professional anthropologist, was one of several Yale personnel taking part in the CIMA program and received the assignment of studying the interaction patterns and religion of the Chuukese people. The final outcome of Goodenough's efforts are presented in this monograph. The data presented pertain to: the Chuukese property system (corporations, forms of ownership, types of property, exchange, relinquishment and acquisition of property, etc.), matrlineal kin groups (the lineage, sib, subsib, ramage, and descent line), kinship (consanguineal and affinal kin, the FUTUK), status systems and kinship behavior, residential kin groups (marriage patterns, nuclear and extended families, residence), territorial and political organization (the district and community), and history of Romonum and the Pwereka sib. Four appendices contain data on land tenure, land holdings on Romonum, a historical sketch of Romonum's lineages, and a glossary of native terms.
