Complementary filiation and marriage in the Trobriand Islands

marriage in tribal societies (3) • Published In 1972 • Pages: 121-157

By: Robinson, Marguerite S..

Abstract
In this article Robinson re-analyses Malinowski's and Powell's data on affinity and filiation and concludes that the position of the father in reference to marriage and filiation in Trobriand society '…is invested with important, and, in some respects, decisive jural, economic and ritual roles, rights and responsibilities. Complementary filiation, then, is of primary importance in Trobriand society, and in this respect resembles closely 'matrilineal' systems in other societies.
