Abstract
This article is primarily concerned with the economic conditions of the Wolof in the Lower Ferlo region of Senegal. Also discussed are the environment, settlement patterns, agriculture, fishing, internal migration and social organization. This region has an almost equal number of Peul inhabitants, who are pastoralists. (Information on this group has been marked for the Fulani file: MS11.) The Lower Ferlo is a poor country and the differing ways of life present problems of social and economic relations. The author concludes by considering recent attempts at change in the area.
