Abstract
The sections of this book included here are the chapters on the Somali character. Somali ethnology, livestock, and the outcast tribes; plus the appendices, glossary, and end map. The sections not processed deal with non-tribal elements in Somaliland. The author had served about ten years in Somaliland as a member of the Colonial Medical Service at the time of publication. He presents the results of his own observations and in many cases compares them to those of earlier writers, especially on more subjective matters. Although this work is far from being an exhaustive ethnographic account, it does present useful data on a number of topics, among them Somali marriage and funeral customs, houses, plants and their uses, domestic animals, games, names, songs, judicial sanctions, and miscellaneous subjects loosely organized.
