Abstract
This study combines the results of the author's field work with archival research to present a processual analysis of social, economic, and demographic change in two Spanish Basque villages -- Echalar in Navarra Province and Murélaga in Vizcaya (Bizkaia) Province -- from the beginning of the 20th century to 1966. The author organized the information around three major time periods. Period 1 covers the time span from 1900 to 1925; period 2, from 1925 to 1945; and period 3, from 1945 to 1966. There is information in this source on Basque social structure, particularly in reference to the domestic group and the AUZOA (neighborhood units or hamlets), on the social and economic history of the villages discussed, and the demographic and cultural changes taking place within them.
