Abstract
Major Gurdon, Superintendent of Ethnology in Assam and the part that later became Meghalaya State, was for three years Deputy-Commissioner of the Khasi District, and knew well the people whose institutions he describes here. This work is 'an attempt to give a systematic account of the Khasi people, their manners and customs, their ethnological affinities, their laws and institutions, their religious beliefs, their folklore, their theories as to their origin, and their language.'
