Concerning the natives of the Antilles
General history of the Antilles occupied by the French … • 2 • Published In 1667 • Pages: HRAF ms: i, 42 [Original: 360-419 ]
By: Du Tertre, Jean Baptiste, McKusick, Marshall Bassford, Verin, Pierre.
Abstract
The original edition was written by a French missionary and based on the works of Father Raymond Breton (see 2: Breton). The second edition in 1667 was expanded from one to four volumes although the additions were not of factual significance, consisting largely of anecdotal material, diatribes against another author, and padding from Breton. The translation is unabridged of the part indicated above. An ethnographic summary, it gives chapters on traditional origins, religion, birth and marriage, common occupations, trade with Europeans, feasts and hospitality, houses and boats, warfare, and disease and death customs.
