The Paramacca Maroons: a study in religious acculturation

University Microfilms InternationalAnn Arbor, Mich. • Published In 1997 • Pages:

By: Lenoir, John D..

Abstract
Lenoir provides a very clear account of Paramaccan religion and acculturation, having lived with the Paramakas for a 26-month period from 1970 to 1972. Having no funding for his research, he was dependent on growing his own food and participating in the Paramaccan system of exchanges. He discusses Paramaccan gods, spirits, cults, oracles, sorcery, and taboos; and better than anyone else, explains the relationship between lineages, witchcraft, and avenging spirits, with their spirit mediums and cults.
