An account of the Abipones, an equestrian people of Paraguay: volume 2

By: Dobrizhoffer, Martin.
Abstract
The material contained in this source was compiled by the author during the eighteen years he spent in South America as a Jesuit missionary during the years 1749-1767. Dobrizhoffer spent seven years of this period in residence among the Abipon and had ample time to observe their customs and traditions, which he later set down and published in 1784, after his return to Europe, as 'An Account of the Abipones, An Equestrian People of Paraguay' (three volumes). This source, volume 2 of the three volume set, deals primarily with the ethnography of the Abipon people, their territory, origins, physical appearance and characteristics, religion, tribal divisions, chiefs or captains (caciques), food, clothing, language, marriage customs, games, diseases, chamans (jugglers), death and mortuary customs, fauna and warfare. A great deal of information is given in this source on language, diseases, fauna and warfare. Volumes 1 and 3 were not processed because they deal with Spanish colonization and unspecified native groups. Volume 1 deals primarily with the geography and natural resources of the area, while volume 3 covers colonization and relations between the Spanish and the natives.
