Abstract
The author travelled in the company of Tehuelche Indians from Punta Arena at the southern tip of Patagonia north to the Rio Negro valley. His personality and adaptability soon gained the respect and trust of his hosts, thus enabling him to participate actively in the daily life of the nomads. The book records extensively the topography, and the fauna and flora of the country traversed. It also relates in detail the ceremonies and habits, the methods of hunting and warfare, the diet and material belongings of the Indians. Information on social organization and religious beliefs are inadequate; and no material is given on kinship structures. Relationships among the Tehuelche, the Araucanians and the Argentine Government are illustrated with concrete events interestingly presented. A fair amount of data appears on the Araucanians (SG4) Araucanians. A list of vocabulary is apended at the end of the book.
