Abstract
This source presents detailed information on Yurak Samoyed religious and mystical beliefs and practices. The author visited the Samoyed for the purpose of collecting linguistic data; however, in the course of his fieldwork, he collected a large number of myths and magic songs. The abstracts and texts of these form the core of the source. They are supplemented by the authors own research and observations on these materials. Cosmogonical myths as well as myths on the origin of culture traits, shamans, spirits, gods and death, are included in the authors collection. Furthermore, the author provides a catalogue of sacred objects, places, animals, and spirits and the ceremonial associated with each. Finally, ample data are provided on mortuary practices and on the powers and duties of shamans.
