The great Russian peasant: culture change or cultural development?

Abstract

Drawing on data collected by Russian ethnographers, the authors examine change and continuity in aspects of traditional Russian culture and society. They find significant change in three areas: increased separation of religion and state (secularization); rapid urbanization; and an out-migration of rural people in search of wage labor (proletarianization). They note significant continuities in family life and marriage customs, among other practices and beliefs, which they attribute to the resilience of core Russian values in the face of decades of government intervention aiming to replace them with communist ideals.
