Abstract
This document, Vol. 1 of a two volume work on the Maori of New Zealand, presents a comprehensive ethnographic study of native life as it existed in pre-European days. The author, a noted authority on the Maori, compiled this work from numerous notes made in the field between the years 1870 to 1920. In this first volume, the author covers the following aspects of Maori life: a physical description of the people, their culture history, the teaching of traditional history in the Whare wananga or school of learning, cosmogony, myth and folklore, religion, magical practices, and social customs both per se and in relation to marriage. Volume 2 of The Maori is in this collection (Best, document 2).
