Abstract
This monograph presents a meticulously detailed and well-rounded ethnography of the Yap people, with a slightly greater emphasis on material culture then on social structure and organization. The monograph is divided into two parts, the first of which presents general information on culture history, geography, the native population and the Yap language, while the second deals in more detail with such aspects as clothing, ornaments and tattooing, foods and their preparation, crafts and trade, numeration, measures, money, house construction and village layout, the canoe, weapons and warfare, games and toys, society and family, science and religion. The work is well illustrated with many plates and figures. The bibliography has not been translated into English. An additional glossary of native words has been added for the benefit of the researcher.
