Abstract
This article describes aspects of Bau Fijian culture prior to when Christianity became the official state religion. The focus is on cultural rules and ceremonies related to major life cycle events, with particular emphasis on pregnancy, child birth, puberty, marriage, and burial. Also described are rituals and sacrifices related to building sacred boats, launching long-distance sailing trips, and succession to higher office.
