Abstract
This first volume of a foundational Dutch language ethnography of the Tobelo covers history, religion, birth, marriage, disease and curing. The discussion of religion is particularly good, with detail on notions of vital force, animism, and spirits. The Tobelo have a tripartite notion of the self as comprised of body, soul and vital force—the latter is found throughout nature and has to be cultivated and increased within the body. A doctor at a missionary clinic, the author lists ailments encountered and describes traditional cures.
