Abstract
This is a study of the basic personality structure of the Alorese and of the factors, particularly those concerned with child rearing, which bring about the development of Alorese personality traits. While some ethnographic materials are included particularly in areas concerning food getting, exchange transactions, funerals and mortuary feasts, concepts of disease and relationships to the supernatural, marriage and social relations, these are discussed primarily in relation to problems of personality formation. There is no attempt at a comprehensive coverage of Alorese culture. The monograph is particularly rich in biographical materials. The life histories of eight individuals are given by the author and these are analyzed by Abraham Kardiner, a psychoanalyst. Also included are the results of several different personality and intellegence tests with Rorschach analyses by Emil Oberholzer. The author, an ethnologist, did field work in the area.
