Abstract
This article draws on anthropological and historical data to trace the evolution of Iban land tenure, particularly in the longer-settled and more commercialized Saribas District of Sarawak. Cramb begins the paper with an examination of the theoretical concepts of property, especially in regard to private vs. common or shared property. This is followed by a summary of the principles of Iban social organization, with a primary focus on the basic units of Iban society -- the household and longhouse community. Cramb then continues with a description of the development of land tenure at both the inter-community (with an emphasis on the trend toward exclusive community property rights in land), and the inter-household levels. The paper concludes '…that Iban land tenure institutions have adapted well to changing requirements and that the longhouse community remains a viable basis for the management of land use in hill farming areas' (p.2).
