By: Barton, Roy Franklin.
Abstract
This source deals mainly with the experiences of the author while teaching school in the pagan districts of Northern Luzon. Barton, while not yet a trained ethnologist, was a gifted observer of native peoples and has written extensively on the pagan groups of the Philippines. Native custom which underlies their law is discussed in some detail. Ifugao religion is also described at length. Short sections on the Kalinga and Bontoc follow the much more lengthy description of his experiences among the Ifugao. Very little space is devoted to material culture and kinship patterns.
