Abstract
This monograph, based on field and archival research, provides a good description of the economic life of the Mam of Santiago Chimaltenango in 1937. Since agriculture is the basis of the Chimalteco economy, Wagley discusses agricultural practices and the land tenure system, including its historical development, in depth. Trade, occupational specialization, wage labor, levels of consumption, and economic stratification are other major topics. Since the monograph is topically focused, other aspects of Mam culture are treated only briefly in the introductory chapter or in more elaborated form where they are important to the discussion of economic life. An index including page references to this document is in the microfiche 2: Wagley, pages 139-150.
