Abstract
This book was written on the basis of the author's personal observations while travelling and living among the indigenous groups of northwestern Mexico during a period totalling over five years. Lumholtz, a famous explorer and natural scientist of the late 19th century, visited various Tarahumara groups and recorded data on the environment and culture observed. Practically all facets of the culture are treated, but not in equal intensity. The sections which discuss ceremonial behavior, peyote, curing, funerals, and religious, are more amply treated here than elsewhere.
