Abstract
This source is a discussion of Omaha religion with emphasis on the organization and practices of Omaha secret societies. The Omaha vision experience is treated in detail. The author's main purpose is to uncover material which is missing or misunderstood in earlier sources on the Omaha. In doing this, he shows the integration of the counter-principles of the hereditary transmission of privilege vs. the achievement of privilege. The author reproduces some material from the early sources along with his comments. Where the original passages are too long he cites page numbers for reference. As a final chapter a collection of folktales related to aspects of the secret societies is presented. The author spent three months among the Omaha.
