Abstract
This document, by a professional anthropologist, is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the history of the Pawnee in the ninteenth century, the acquisition of the Ghost Dance by the Pawnee, and the cultural significance of the Ghost Dance to Pawnee Society. The second part deals with the Hand Game, played by the Pawnee both prior to and following the advent of the Ghost Dance ceremony, as well as its distribution among other tribes. The detailed analysis of the Hand Game given in sections vii-xii has not been processed for this file. This document is particularly valuable for its excellent account of Pawnee history and White-Indian relations in the ninteenth century.
