Changes in Hidatsa residence petterns: a cross-cultural interpretation

Abstract
This work posits a change in Hidatsa marital residence patterns that occurred as a consequence of population collapse from recurrent epidemics, resulting in a shift from a predominantly matrilocal to a multi-local pattern. The author supports this conclusion using cross-cultural studies of multi-local residence, especially in horticultural societies, as a response to depopulation due to infectious diseases.
