Abstract
This monograph, written as an integral part of an ethnographic survey in the Missouri-Saskatchewan area, presents a detailed description of the societal divisions and social relationships of the Blackfoot Indians, prior to and subsequent to reservation settlement. A majority of the data refer to the Piegan branch, with some comparative material from the Blood and North Blackfoot subdivisions. Extensive comparisons are made with other societies in the survey area, including Plains, Plateau and Shoshone area Indians. Emphasis is placed on the band as the unit of socio-political organization, and its relation to the defined tribal units, marriage, residence, property rights, child-rearing and the socialization process, and social interaction.
