Abstract
This study provides detailed descriptions of aspects of Nubian culture and history. A major theme is the continuity of Nubian identity despite the advent of Islam, forces for colonial incorporation and national integration, and growing labor migration to cities. While highlighting the effects of such external influences on traditional family life and relations between different Nubian groups, the author notes continuities in language, ethnic identity and geographic belonging, attributable to Nubian women who remained in rural villages while men migrated to urban centers. As the men adopted Arabic and a modernized outlook, the women continued speaking their native languages and socialized children with core Nubian values.
