Abstract
The book covers aspects of Babylonian culture from the First (Amorite) Dynasty on, noting prior Sumerian and Akkadian influences. The discussion focuses on economic organization, including the organization of work and employment, trade and exchange transactions, and loans and sureties. The author also looks at religious beliefs and practices, including gods, temples, and clergy. Arts, architecture, science, and literature are other topics reviewed. An unusually long chronology is used, with the Old Babylonian (First Dynasty) period beginning 2225 BC, and the reign of Hammurabi dated 2124-2080 BC (1792-1750 BC in the middle chronology); it does not begin to align with the middle chronology until the close of the Kassite Dynasty at 1185 BC (1155 BC in the middle chronology).
