Performing piety and Islamic modernity in a Turkish village

By: Hart, Kimberley.

Abstract
This article is another example illustrating the author's thesis of the dual nature--secular and sacred--of Turkish modernity (see documents nos. 21 and 22.) In this case, the author examines the religious practice of good deeds ([n]hayır[/n]) which villagers have adopted in an effort to reconcile increased prosperity from economic development and growing social inequality, with visions of the ideal egalitarian Islamic community.
