Kinship terminology of the South African Bantu

By: Van Warmelo, N. J. (Nicolaas Jacobus).

Abstract
This source is the work of a professional ethnographer whose data were gathered from native informants. It contains a detailed accounting of Zulu kinship terms, claiming for them a common origin with the terminological systems of related non-Zulu Bantu peoples, especially Xosa (FX17) and Ndebele (FX18). He argues that differences among the terminological systems discussed are related to differences among these groups in behavioral patterns, including especially marital regulations and the relative import of seniority status within the family and the sib.
