Kinship and marriage among the Lozi of Northern Rhodesia and the Zulu of Natal

By: Gluckman, Max.
Abstract
In this work Gluckman discusses the relation of bride-price size, presence or lack of agnatic lineage groups, inheritance rules, general stability of marriage, and nuclear household among the Lozi and the Zulu. He concludes that there is some correlation between the lack of distinct lineage grouping and marriage instability, as seen among the Lozi; conversely, that there is a correlation between rigid agnatic lineage rules and marriage stability among the Zulu. There are extensive passages of comparison with other central African and southern Bantu societies.
