Abstract
This article by a specialist on Yoruba ethnology, discusses the significance of the classification of kin among the Yoruba on the basis of a seniority which may be related to or quite distinct from the principle of relative age. The author analyzes kinship terms, the factors determining the usage of specific forms under particular circumstances, and the bases for distinguishing which persons are subject to what terms. Coincident to the discussion of terminology, the article gives data on interpersonal relationships, especially among wives of a polygamous family.
