Abstract
Captain Rattray's studies of the Ashanti are considered the best sources of ethnographic information on this Gold Coast nation. This document is a preliminary survey of the group published after Rattray had been in the field for one year. Rattray was head of the British government's Anthropology Department in Ashanti, West Africa. This document covers kinship organization and pertinent ritual as well as religious beliefs and practices related to spirits and ancestors. Rattray discusses the Ashanti land tenure system and he discusses the historical development of the Ashanti nation. The symbol of Ashanti nationality, the Golden Stool, is also analyzed. Information on neolithic instruments, goldsmiths and the manufacture of weights, as well as some anthropometric data, can also be found in this volume.
