The art of assemblage

Res.45 • Published In 2004 • Pages: 186-210

By: Blier, Suzanne Preston.

Abstract
This document argues that Dahomean art forms are not characterized by common, ethnically-shared, cultural expression. Instead, they constitute an assemblage of dissimilar styles historically borrowed from neighboring peoples and kingdoms. The document discusses this feature by using popular Dohomean sculptures as examples.
