Abstract
This work by a government administrator is considered one of the basic sources of information on the Bambara. It is primarily concerned with the history, beliefs, and social life of the people, with only incidental data on the material culture. From the author's descriptions, it is apparent that associations based on age grouping, religious cults, and secret societies are co-terminous; similarly, governmental and territorial control is exercised by the extended kinship group which the author terms 'clan' and which constitutes the community. As a result, data related to several aspects of the culture have often been assigned to only one of the principal categories. Chapter 7 of the original, which contains Bambara texts and their French translations, has not been processed for the file.
