Abstract
This document discusses the lives of rural Cambodian women who, beginning in mid-1990s, migrated to Phnom Pehn to work in the newly expanding garment factories. The focus is on the ways these women dealt with various contradictory expectations and aspirations. Following the story of one women as an example, the document discusses how the women mediated their culturally expected duties and modernist aspirations throgh urban employment, rural networks, and participation in "modern" consumptio and activities.
