Abstract
This is an analysis of socialzation and child-rearing practices as observed by the author in a village which she calls 'Peihotien'. Wolf considers differences in practices and in the treatment and expectations of children by their parents according to the sex of the child. Changes in a woman's status and position within the family effected by the birth of a child are also discussed.
