expand_more Description

The Basseri are a pastoral nomadic people living around Shiraz, capital of the Iranian province of Fars, in land that stretches between deserts in the south to high mountain ranges in the north. The Basseri raise sheep, goats, camels and donkeys, taking them through scheduled seasonal migrations. Most Basseri speak a dialect of Farsi widely spoken in Shiraz town. The Basseri consider themselves a separate group, despite sharing language and cultural features with neighboring groups. Basseri life is described largely as of the 1950s when the supreme chief of the tribe was politically autonomous.
