Contemporary Cubans are descendents of Native Americans (Ciboney and Arawak), Spanish conquerors and administrators, and African slaves. Until the end of the nineteenth century Cuba was a Spanish colony. Cuba had economic and political ties to the United States until the socialist Revolution in 1959. Cubans speak Spanish.
